Welcome to Newport Rugby! We are a group
of guys dedicated to continuing athletic excellence in the toughest,
most demanding game on foot. Rugby has everything - fast running,
hard hitting, athletic skill and stamina, strategy and tactics.
Newport Rugby offers you the opportunity to challenge yourself
in games against players from all over the northeast. There's
also an active social calendar, for which Rugby has always been
known. Newport Rugby was founded
in 1980. We have about 70 active members, and many more former
players or social members still affiliated with the club.
Most players are between 21 and 40 in age.
Most of our new recruits have never played
Rugby before. We get a lot of guys who played football, and
their skills are a good match. But we get soccer players too
- Rugby is a game that rewards strength and speed. Learning
Rugby is not hard - if you are physically fit and have an
aggressive attitude, this game is for you. There really isn't
a book that can teach you how to play, but come to practice
and you'll learn the basics quickly. We have both A and B
squads, both of which play every Saturday, so you'll get playing
time right away as a rookie.
Rugby is an extremely rough game and just
like football, injuries are common. Typical injuries are cuts
and abrasions, pulled hamstrings, knee and shoulder injuries,
bruises, black eyes, or concussions. You must have your own
health insurance to play with Newport Rugby. Newport Rugby
has liability insurance.

We are members of New England Rugby Football Union (N.E.R.F.U.).
NERFU has three men's divisions (we are in the 2nd division),
as well as a college division. NERFU in turn is part of
USARugby, the national rugby organization. The Second
Division is: Newport, Burlington, Providence, Boston Old
Gold, New Haven, Portland, Springfield, Boston Charles
River. Our Referees are from all over New England as well.
We play our fellow 2nd Division teams in the Fall Season
(Sep/Oct/Nov). Results from the fall season count towards
the championship seeding at the annual NERFU tournament,
which Newport Rugby has hostsed for many years in May. We have won the bids
for the tourney for the last 10+ years because we have
among the best playing fields and settings in New England.
The NERFU Tournament is the highlight of the playing year.
We have as many as 20 teams, with three fields of play.
There's a beer and food tent, sponsors, and trophies awarded.
In the Spring Season (March/April/May), we play teams
from other divisions or regions, even international touring
sides.
